AMP launches integrated step/servo motor

 


Customers who build high throughput production machinery demand cost effective, high performance motion control. Applied Motion Products has responded to this demand by developing a broad range of step-servo motors.

Ideally suited for applications such as packaging and labeling, automated test and measurement, automated assembly and life sciences. Step servo motors use closed loop feedback and advanced control technology, leading to 50% more torque, fast dynamic response and high operating efficiency. This approach combines the best features of step motor and servo system performance in a cost effective motion control solution.

The TSMs are an all-in-one motor/drive solution and include NEMA size 17 and 23 options, plus enhanced versions capable of providing torque output typical of size 24 motors. All models include pulse/direction options, fieldbus options and stored program options. The full range consists of 36 models in all, most of them readily stocked right here in California.

IP65 Step Motor - Rain Simulation Test

Applied Motion Products is pleased to announce the addition of NEMA size 23, 24 and 34 stepper motors with IP65 ratings for operation in severe environmental conditions. These new models, dust proof and resistant to low pressure water jets, are ideal for applications in wet factory environments such as the food and beverage industry or outdoor use. Key features include a nickel plated brass cable gland, sealed laminations, a front shaft contact seal and an optional IP65 rated encoder cover for use with products that require feedback. All models have an internal corrosion-resistant film coating as standard. For improved protection in high-humidity environments an advanced coating is available as an option.

IP65 specifies a product that is dust tight (no ingress of dust; complete protection against contact) and protected against water jets (water projected by a nozzle from any direction shall have no harmful effects).

Encoder Feedback in Step Motor Systems

Applied Motion Products offer closed loop control features on all of our stepper drives, motors, and integrated products by utilizing incremental quadrature encoders mounted to the rear shaft of the step motor. Stepper drives with encoder feedback connectors can be married to double-shaft step motors with encoders pre-assembled for you. Integrated steppers are available with encoders built directly into the housing of the motor.

Adding an encoder to your stepper system greatly enhances performance by providing you with these closed-loop functions: Stall Detection and Stall Prevention.

Stall Detection notifies the user/system/machine as soon a motor stall occurs, eliminating the uncertainty of whether or not the motor reached its target position.

Stall Prevention actually eliminates stalls by dynamically controlling the stator current and speed of the motor to maintain torque in all situations. This enables otherwise impossible control schemes in stepper systems, such as torque-limited velocity control and torque-limited position control.

Applied Motion Products low cost STR2 stepper drive 

 

Applied Motion Products is pleased to announce the STR2 step motor drive. The STR2 is a compact, digital step & direction drive, great for OEM applications requiring basic step & direction control of a 2-phase stepper motor. The STR2 outputs up to 2.2 A/phase to the step motor, and is compatible with a variety of 2-phase step motors that have been selected to optimize performance of both the drive and motor.
The STR2 drive features advanced microstepping performance and sophisticated current control with anti-resonance. Anti-resonance electronically damps motor and system resonances, which improves motor smoothness and torque over a wide speed range.
Each STR2 step motor drive operates in either Step & Direction or Pulse/Pulse control mode. Selecting between these two modes is done by moving a jumper located under the cover of the drive. Each STR2 drive can microstep up to 20,000 steps/rev with a 1.8º step motor (1/100 step), and can even microstep the step motor when the command pulses are low resolution. This feature is called Microstep Emulation. All drive setup is done via dip switches on the side of the drive, including motor selection, running current, idle current, and step resolution.
The STR2 is RoHS compliant and CE certified. Matching step motors and DC power supplies are also available from Applied Motion Products.

The STM23Q-3AE integrated stepper is a drive+motor unit, fusing a NEMA 23 step motor and a sophisticated 5.0 A/phase (peak-of-sine) stepper drive into a single device. Power to the drive, located at the rear of the motor, must be supplied by an external DC supply. See Related and Recommended Products below for compatible 24 and 48 volt DC power supplies.

The STM23Q-3AE integrated stepper can operate in all of the same control modes as the S option, plus the ability to run a Q program stored in non-volatile memory. Q programs are created using Applied Motion’s Q Programmer™ software, which provides powerful commands for motion, I/O, conditional processing, multi-tasking, math functions, and more. All STM23 units are setup and configured using Applied Motion’s ST Configurator™ software.

An integral 1000-line (4000 count/rev) incremental encoder is housed inside the same enclosure as the drive electronics, providing protection from dust and debris. The integration of the encoder means the STM23Q-3AE can perform special functions not available otherwise. Stall Detection notifies the system as soon as the required torque is too great for the motor, which results in a loss of synchronization between the rotor and stator, also known as stalling. Stall Prevention actually prevents stalling of the step motor by dynamically adjusting motor speed to maintain synchronization of the rotor to the stator under all conditions. This unique feature allows step motors to operate in a much broader range of applications than previously available to step motors, such as torque-control applications. The Stall Prevention feature also performs static position maintenance, which maintains the position of the motor shaft when at rest.

Each STM23 integrated stepper comes with 3 digital inputs, 1 digital output, and 1 analog input. The digital inputs accept signals of 5-24 VDC and can be used for connecting pulse & direction signals, end-of-travel limit switches, jog switches, quadrature encoder signals, PLC outputs, sensors, or many other signal types. The digital output can be connected to PLC inputs, counters, lights, relays, or other devices. The analog input accepts 0-5 VDC signals and can be used for velocity and position control.

The STM23Q-3AE comes with an RS-232 port for programming and serial communications.
